Moving can often be complex, with many details to remember. Here's a checklist to assist you during the process.

When moving, it's essential to manage contracts, notifications and communications

If you were renting, remember to terminate your lease in time—many agreements have a one-month notice period.

Notify the relevant authorities of your address change.  Submit a change of address notification to the Digital and Population Data Services Agency (Digi- ja väestötietovirasto, DVV) and Posti.

Inform both the property manager and the maintenance company of your change of address.

Make an electricity contract for your new apartment and remember to cancel the old one.

When moving into a detached house, it is good to remember the electricity, possible district heating, waste management and water contracts.

Possible operator issues, including internet or possible landline connection.

Check whether the home insurance is in order in the old apartment (for as long as necessary) and of course whether it is valid in the new one.

If you have children, remember to register them for daycare and/or school.

Do you need a parking space or a sauna slot? Many parking spaces and sauna slots are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, depending on the housing company.

Is a resident parking permit required?

Are renovations needed? If necessary, notify other residents and the property manager.

Housing allowance and other forms from Kela.

Leave your contact information at your old apartment in case mail arrives. Ask the previous tenant to do the same.

Moving and packing checklist

Are you moving directly into your new home, or will you need temporary storage?

If you need storage, it's a good idea to get things organized in advance. Taking care of arrangements ahead of time often helps avoid unnecessary stress.

Will you move yourself or use a moving company?

If you're handling the move yourself, do you need help from family or friends? Will you need to rent transport equipment, such as a van or trailer? Moving companies are often fully booked at the end of the month—so in this case, the early bird gets the worm.

Remember to pack carefully.

At the very least, protect fragile items well and label each box clearly. If you’re putting some of your things in storage, this way you won’t have to open every box, and the items you need most won’t end up at the back and bottom of the storage unit. Careful planning also helps prevent damage to your belongings.

Don’t forget to clean and empty all closets, storage spaces, and the attic (if applicable) in your old home.

Does the new home have smoke detectors—and enough of them?

Is the new home connected to an antenna or cable TV network?

Moving can be hectic, so protect the floors, corners, and doorways in the new home.
This way, you’ll avoid unnecessary mess and damage in your fresh space right from the start.

Remember to return all keys from the previous home (including those for storage rooms, parking spaces, etc.).
